Portrait Course: We will start by using drawing materials (charcoal or pencil) to practice capturing the shapes and values of the portrait through a process of blocking in, adding darker tones and lifting out highlights. Following this we will conduct a monochrome study in paint again practicing getting shapes and values via an initial block in then adding darks and lifting highlights. After this we will start introducing colour and thicker paint and conduct a Master study before working with a live model in the final weeks. No experience necessary. This will be a relaxed and encouraging class designed to build up confidence and skills. Jack will demonstrate in charcoal and oils but students are free to bring any medium they prefer (although oils, acrylic and gouache would be the easiest to follow with).

Session: Thursday 22 February - 28 March, 1.45pm-3.45pm

Tickets: £70/£63

Tutor: Jack Metcalf

Jack has a strong connection to landscapes and the environment and throughout his life has sought out different ways to engage with them. He has studied environmental sciences and travelled widely throughout the world which has fostered his love for nature and landscapes. Like a lot of people during the pandemic he started to take his creative practice more seriously and took up landscape painting with oils and acrylics. He has developed his skills through a sustained period of study at The Classical Art Academy in Southbourne and short courses at AUB and elsewhere. Jack also started and runs a lifedrawing group in Bournemouth and regularly runs art classes in the Bournemouth and Dorset area. Jack is passionate about making Fine Art skills more accessible and particularly enjoys sharing his knowledge about oil and landscape painting.
