Looking to explore oil painting but not sure where to begin? Join artist Jack for a relaxed and friendly introduction to working with oils, perfect for beginners or those with limited experience in painting.
Over the course, Jack will guide you through a series of practical exercises designed to build your confidence with this versatile medium. You'll learn key techniques around colour mixing, values, composition, and style, working from life, photographs, and inspirational studies of other artists.
The classes will cover a variety of themes – from landscapes and still lifes to a basic introduction to portraiture – helping you develop a broad set of skills. Each term will culminate in the creation of a final piece based on your own chosen subject and composition.
Whether you're picking up a paintbrush for the first time or looking to gain confidence in oils, this supportive and structured course is a great place to start.
Students are encouraged to brill their own materials, although basic materials can be borrowed from the centre. Paper will be provided. If you're unsure about which materials to bring or purchase, we recommend bringing only minimal supplies to your first session. Jack will be happy to advise you on what you'll need going forward!

Tutor: Jack Metcalf
Jack has a strong connection to landscapes and the environment and throughout his life has sought out different ways to engage with them. He has studied environmental sciences and travelled widely throughout the world which has fostered his love for nature and landscapes. Like a lot of people during the pandemic he started to take his creative practice more seriously and took up landscape painting with oils and acrylics. He has developed his skills through a sustained period of study at The Classical Art Academy in Southbourne and short courses at AUB and elsewhere. Jack also started and runs a lifedrawing group in Bournemouth and regularly runs art classes in the Bournemouth and Dorset area. Jack is passionate about making Fine Art skills more accessible and particularly enjoys sharing his knowledge about oil and landscape painting.
