Building on the skills learned in the Improvers' workshop you will experiment with how to graduate, glaze, layer and light a Sea and Sky composition using non-traditional colours, spending a little more time on movement in a painting.

Dave White will be leading this workshop and the session will cover :

 

1 hour Acrylic Techniques – Background and Skies
1 hours composition and background seas
0.5 Lunch
2.5 Waves and wash
1 hour spray and surf
 

 Students will need to bring:

  • Either a 24 x 18” stretched canvas or similar size canvas board
  • Or a similar size canvas board
  • 75ml tubes of acrylic paint; Cadmium Red Deep or Crimson, Cadmium Yellow, Ultramarine and Pthalo or Prussian Blue, Titanium White (plus Hookers Green, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre)
 
  • Paper kitchen towel
  • 2 containers for water (preferably not glass)
  • 2 x Plastic palette or a saucer (yogurt pot?) for mixing paint
  • a 1 inch wide synthetic (watercolour) flat brush
  • Some reference for a painting you might like to try and most importantly….
  • Any other paintbrushes you might care to bring
  • an open and willing heart with a smile!

Dave White is a local artist and is the author of the book ‘Sea and Sky in Acrylics‘, which analyses the characteristics of seascapes, how they can inspire and what techniques you can use to describe them in acrylic paint. Dave is also a well-known pet portraitist and landscape painter and is exhibiting in January at Forest Arts Centre from the 11th October - 19th November 2025.
