The Parkinson’s Dance class provides a creative, fun and social space where dance sparks imaginations, nurtures expression and empowers our bodies and minds to move and invent as the individuals we are, rather than the condition we have - a Pavilion Dance South West roll-out class.

Taught by experienced Dance For Parkinson's Tutors Julie and Liz.

The class is adapted to the ability of the participants in a fun, creative environment and can be done seated or standing. Carers or family members go free and are encouraged to participate.

What you need: Wear comfy clothes and soft shoes you can move in, if desired. Bring plenty of water!

Tutors: Liz Hooks, Julie Hand and Caroline Reece.

Liz: Liz is a physio specialising in neurological conditions and Julie has experience in yoga and holistic movement. Her background is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist after studying BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy at Birmingham University. Liz regularly enjoys dancing, baking and keeping fit, as well as enjoying a variety of dance styles including African Dance. This year has provided Liz with the opportunity to perform at local festivals and carnivals and she brings her experience of performance and differing dance styles into the class room.

Julie: With a background in fitness and dance and a Reiki II practitioner, Julie’s focus is on the therapeutic aspects of conscious movement and breath to promote health, well-being and peace of mind. Qualified with the British Wheel of Yoga and teaching since 2003, she has since spent time studying the principles of Tibetan Yoga and works to incorporate the philosophy of Kum Nye Tibetan Healing Movement into the practice. Julie has focused her yoga sharing on breath awareness and using it as a tool for improved well-being, relaxation and calming of the nervous system – often working on a one-to-one basis with people suffering with stress and its associated symptoms.

Julie’s teaching style is breath-led, incorporating flow and rhythm, to impart a sense of ‘being’ in one’s body. Finding her way to the Parkinson’s Dance Science Model in 2016 was a complete joy.

Caroline: Since completing her training at The Urdang Academy & Centre, Caroline went on to teach & perform with Nexus Dance Company for 6 years with repertoire including work by David Massingham, Janet Smith , Emlyn Claid and Nigel Charnock. She then performed with Emma Diamond, Claire Russ, Felix Ruckert, Gary Clarke and in Dance For Camera projects with Wendy Houstoun and Nigel Charnock before joining balletLORENT, where she has performed in most of balletLORENT’s productions since 1996.

Caroline has also performed in Peter Pan at Northern Stage directed by Erica Whyman and two previous Northern Stage productions directed by Alan Lydiard, The Black Eyed Roses and a tour of Animal Farm.

She has taught at Newcastle College, Northumbria University, The Urdang Academy, the CAT at DanceCity, Billy London LTD, was Rehearsal Director for Verve at Northern School of Contemporary Dance and now teaches dance to people with Parkinson’s.
