Piano from London, soul from New Orleans

The last time Dom Pipkin visited the Forest Arts Centre he played to a wonderful warm-spirited crowd, and recorded a number of live tracks that went on to form part of his “Smokin’ Boogie - the Bootleg Live Sessions” record.  He is thrilled to be back!

Alongside a glittering session career (David Byrne, Ray Davies, Morcheeba), piano player and songwriter Dom Pipkin has been described by Blues in Britain as “one of the world’s greatest exponents of New Orleans piano”.   He first discovered the New Orleans style in the early 90s, and has gone on to become a regular visitor and performer in that city, with appearances that include the highly acclaimed “Piano Night” and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival.  He is a regular fixture on the European blues and boogie Woogie festival circuit having played 1000’s of club and theatre, radio and TV dates in a career spanning nearly three decades.  Jazz star Jamie Cullum says I cant hold a candle to this guy”.

Pipkin developed a particular specialisation for the unique flavours of maverick New Orleans piano star James Booker (1939 - 1983) capturing the player’s trademark combination of driving blues married with rhapsodic classical influences.  He was invited to play at the world premiere of the documentary “Bayou Maharajah” at SXSW in 2014, and at multiple subsequent screenings of the film.

With support from The Darwins, formed in April 2013. The band prides itself on never having played or even rehearsed a cover song. All the material is written by Neil and arranged by the band. The music draws on elements of soul, jazz and folk and the lyrics deal with both personal and political themes. Above all, the band represent years of musicianship and a passion for quality songwriting and performance. The Darwins play the way music should be: with meaning.

Event: Thursday 12 January, 7:30pm

Tickets: Pay what you decide!

Our Green Room Live nights are Pay What You Decide because we know that everyone’s situation is different and for many the last couple of years has been tough.

We want anyone to feel able to take a chance on trying something new and seeing if it’s for you. If this applies to you, we just ask you to contribute the equivalent of a cup of tea or coffee. Otherwise, we’d like to invite you to consider how much you’re able to pay to support local live music: the income we make enables us to continue these nights long into the future.

We’re asking you to decide this on booking this year to avoid handling cash or creating queues in the venue, but if you enjoy the show and want to make an additional donation as you leave, we have donation boxes and a contactless donation point in the foyer and bar:

  • £2.50: taste it and see – the average price of a cup of tea or coffee
  • £5: average price usually paid at previous Green Room Live gigs – a good contribution]
  • £10: our recommended ticket price for great value and a warm feeling of supporting live music
  • £15: average ticket price for all our gigs
  • £50: average price for a big stadium gig
  • Green Room Live: Dom Pipkin + The Darwins + Support
