Join local artist Tom Marshall on a peaceful walk and make a series of brief drawings/ paintings from life, working directly from observation.
Suitable for all levels of experience, from complete beginner to international master! Tom will give help and advice, and demo techniques- where wanted- but you can just come along and paint!

When: 10 January 2025 10:00-12:30
Meeting point: Junction between Marine Drive East and Barton Court Avenue- under the shelter just along.
What to bring:Please bring something to sit on to be a barrier between you and a bench. Bringing a small thermos with a hot drink, plus a snack, is also a good idea. Additionally, whilst we strive to provide some basic materials, make sure to get in touch with the centre if you need financial support to purchase them. If you are more experience, please feel free to bring your own kit!

Tom's suggested art kit:
1. Watercolour pad, or stiff envelope with pieces of offcuts of paper
2. Elastic band to hold paper in place if it's windy
3.A few sharp pencils
4. At least one watercolour brush, but if you have them, take a larger brush ( with a head something like the size of the top joint of your thumb) a medium one ( like the top joint of your little finger, or pencil- thickness) and a medium small one (optional) for a bit of detail.
5. Small water-pot (something unlikely to break- empty yogurt pot?)
6. Small box of watercolours (or maybe 2 or 3 small tubes - a blue, a brown and a golden yellow- and a plastic lid as a palette)
7. A handful of pastels- (Unison  pastels are by far the best)- you might like to take just a limited number- e.g. I might take a brown, a blue, a white and a gold or red, rather than a whole boxful. You can use these instead of paint, if you want, and bring brushes but leave your paints at home, as they are partially water- soluble.
9. A small recyclable plastic bottle to pour waste painting water into.

What to wear: Please be mindful of the weather and consider the amount of layers you wear (keep warm!) as we will be taking pauses to draw/paint appropriate. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

Tickets: £3*

Tutor: Tom Marshall

Tom Marshall- born 1976- is an award-winning artist based in Branksome. Self-taught in drawing and painting, he grew up in the Gloucestershire countryside, and studied fine art at Falmouth, where he learnt various kinds of printmaking, but graduated without the confidence to work in art. He spent the next 14 years doing entirely different things, including working in a special needs school, a hospital, in a kitchen on a Christian community, and teaching and running courses in EFL. Leaving this, as the balance of doing this as a single parent became too much, he went self-employed as an artist in 2013.

In the last few years, Tom has taken part in both solo shows- e.g. at Russell Cotes and Lighthouse, and group exhibitions, including the Red House, Hatch Gallery, Mottisfont and St Barbe, plus further afield, with the Drawing Society, London Biennale, etc, in London, the Bath Society of Artists Summer show, Thelma Hulbert Gallery and the South West Academy in Exeter, He has won prizes for his "plein air" (outdoor, on-the-spot) painting/drawing, including at the 2019 Pintar Rapido, in Chelsea, and the 2024 Otter Gallery event in Wimborne.

Tom has led a number of workshops in the last few years- often with the aim of helping others to work from life, rather than photos, and to do so freely and with fun, encouraging a mix of good observational and technical skills with the liberty to draw fluently and- hopefully- with confidence. Having worked indoors for many years, Tom appreciates being able to do what he does, which is a source of real joy. He enjoys using an unusually wide range of different materials, and, as well as working outdoors in watercolour, pastels, pen and ink, and more; paints on copper and other metals, makes small 3D wire drawings, and does various kinds of traditional and experimental hand-made prints, including woodcut, printing with dry media, and various kinds of mono- and intaglio printmaking.
